RIAA Sucks The Atlanta Journal-Constitution had a giant article about the RIAA's battle with downloaders in Sunday's issue. For the opinions of downloaders, they went to the Warped Tour, where their 15-year-old interviewees’ main objectives were to get drunk and crowd surf, and none of them had any grasp on the moral aspect of the situation. None of those kids that they quoted had anything to say except the general opinion of "We don't care! They can't stop us! Wooooooo!" I'm a 15 year old girl and I download, so I think I'm a pretty good example of the kind of person they were going for. Morally, if I download 3 or 4 songs and really like the artist, I have to buy the CD. I don't generally download entire albums, and if I do, I feel bad about it and go buy it eventually. I don't even copy it to CD, I just listen to it on my computer. The one time I burned an entire CD for myself was when I sat on my friend's Foo Fighters and broke it, and bought her a new one and burned it for myself. In that situation, two records WERE bought, so I didn't feel bad about it. I burnt 2 other CDs for Sagen, but that was just once, and again, the ones I burned them from were bought. I would never even think about buying records from most of the artists I like without my Kazaa, because it's so hard to find good bands out there now. I have to know that what I'm buying is going to be worth it, because most of what's out there is shit, and CDs are so overpriced. If they could figure out a way to combat the few people who actually download whole albums and burn them to sell, that would be nice. And guess what? I bet they could do that by changing how much of their profit goes to the "conglomerates that run the business. (Five companies control about 80 percent of it.)" That's what I would have said to the stupid AJC. I like what this guy had to say. “ ‘People are voting with their dollars and saying if you’re gonna release albums that aren’t great, we’re just gonna download songs,’ says Barrera of the Hiss. ‘It costs a couple of dollars to put out a CD, but it [sells for] $19. It’s ridiculous.’ ” 2003-08-05 @ 3:15 p.m. |
